temperatures. we're in the 20s and 30s. 29 in santa rosa. 30 degrees in livermore. still dry out there. we're not expecting a lot of frost this morning. it is frigid. some cities it's colder than 24 hours ago. that's what happens when you lose that wind. nonetheless, we're going to warm up into the mid to upper 50s today. the 60s return tomorrow. and then we actually get close to the 70s. we'll show you on the seven-day forecast. let's check on that drive. good morning, mike inouye. >> good morning. a great note about the freezing temperatures. yesterday we did see some ice over near the claremont hotel in a shady patch of roadway because water got on there and froze. there you go. it doesn't take rain or mist. anything can cause ice. we're looking over here to the golden gate bridge with a smooth flow of traffic. it is open. both directions moving smoothly what traffic there is. farther north on highway 116 in sonoma county a car crashed into a pole so there is traffic

control or they may close that for a short period of time. to the east bay, oakland shows a smooth drive. we do have construction between downtown and 23rd. no major issues because of the light flow. back to you. >> thank you very much. it's 4:32. we are following developing news out of roanoke park where sheriff's detectives have found the body in the trunk of a car. sonoma county sheriff's deputies found that body last night when they found the silver car in a nor parking zone. the body was found wrapped in a blanket. investigators say they don't know how the unidentified victim died. "today in the bay's" christie smith is headed to the scene. we'll have a live report coming up at 5:00. on thursday the oprah winfrey network will broadcast an interview with lance armstrong and during that interview the disgraced cyclist admits to doping. it's a saga that has some outraged and some conflicted. this morning an east bay man

speaking out about the cycling legend who said he helped save his life. stephanie chuang has the story. >> i wanted you to know how much i appreciate your support. >> reporter: it's the first thing you see when you walk into bob's house. the yellow jersey signed by lance armstrong. >> it's a constant reminder of how it all began. >> reporter: in 2001 he fought testicular cancer. >> it was the tumor the size of a big cantaloupe. >> reporter: that's when a friend hand him armstrong's book. >> he was a big inspiration which thrilled us to no end because it made him fight for his life. he won. >> reporter: the couple met armstrong several times after raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for his organization. with his reported admission of doping today, they are conflicted. appreciative of what armstrong has done but struggle with him as a person comparing him to the likes of barry bonds.

>> you can't take away what he's done with his name and helped the millions of people who have been diagnosed with cancers. >> shame on lance. in the same breath, congratulations to him for his fight with cancer and it's thanks to that we are where we are now. >> reporter: there's something else that turned him into the every day symbol of inspiration. when hammer met armstrong and his oncologist for the first time in 2001, he was 48 hours away from having surgery that would prevent him from having anymore kids. >> i took his advice and didn't have kids. >> months later hammer was doing well and his wife was pregnant with josh who is now 9 years old. >> there are moments in your life where you are reminded of what you have and how it got there. that will never go away. >> reporter: stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. 4:34. new this morning, san rafael police turn to the public to help identify a robbery suspect.

they release the surveillance vil video robbing the bank off 101 and second street. it happened on january 4th just after 5:00. no weapon was seen or mentioned and no one was injured. police say the robber took the cash and fled on foot. anyone with information should call the san rafael police department. san jose will soon have a police chief. >> okay. i'll take this one. san jose will soon have a police chief at least a temporary leader. the city now needs a few more months to find a replacement for retiring chief chris moore. until then, san jose deputy chief larry eskville is the acting chief starting his career in 1984 as a san jose reserve officer. for the past year he commanded the bureau of field operations. moore leaves his post this friday. protesters expected to show up at an oakland city council

tonight as city leaders consider hiring a controversial consultant. constitue the city wants to hire william bratton. bratton is known for new york's stop and frisk policy which was just declared a violation of civil rights by a federal judge last week. the search is on for a gunman who shot and killed a man not far from the east palo alto police station. the system alerted police to that crime. they found a man behind a home on illinois street. he had been shot multiple times. police say a second victim turned up at stanford medical center with gunshot wounds. at last check he was in critical condition. new york being the first city to pass tougher gun laws in

the wake of the shooting in newtown. the president is currently reviewing a series of proposals from vice president biden. >> if there is a step we can take that will save even one child from what happened in newtown, we should take that step. >> state senator is pushing a bill right now that would close a loophole in california's assault weapons ban. that loophole allows a sale of weapons with magazines that can be quickly replaced simply by pushing a button. and a warning for women this morning after a violent attack in a popular san francisco neighborhood. here is a sketch of the suspect just released. take a look. police say he tried to rape a 31-year-old woman in the mission district earlier this month. the victim says the man threw her to the pavement and while straddling her slammed her head to the concrete. police say she was able to scream for help and the suspect ran off. anyone with information is urged

to contact police. lawsuits brought by victims of the san bruno pipeline explosion against pg&e may no longer be going to trial. during a hearing in san mateo county court yesterday, lawyers say they've come up with a plan to settle remaining lawsuits in the next three months. more than 320 san bruno residents have active suits against pg&e for its role in the explosion that ultimately killed eight people and destroyed an entire neighborhood. some 120 other people have already received settlements. pg&e crews are working to restore power to most people living in a neighborhood. a big tree came crashing down onto a home. look at that. knocked out a power pole. 30 customers still without power. most are forced to find a place to stay overnight. the tree destroyed the entire second floor of that house hit. a neighbor actually heard and felt all that commotion. >> i was in the house on the

computer. i thought it was an earthquake literally. yeah. i didn't know what it was. >> understandably. thankfully no one was hurt. a woman inside that home when it happened but she was downstairs. pg&e hopes to have power restored by 7:00 this morning. what a thing to come tumbling down. >> that will leave a mark. >> a big one. christina loren is back and says we don't see that frost out there but it is downright cold. >> bone chilling cold this morning. good morning to you. you made it to tuesday. monday is now in the rearview mirror. 30 degrees in novato. 39 in san francisco. you are at 30 this morning. good morning, napa. what's happening is it's so cold out there possibly that trees roots were damaged by the very freezing conditions we had over the past five days. this is the last morning we expect the mid to low 20s. we'll warm up each and every morning and guess what's on the way this afternoon? the upper 50s.

comfortable conditions out there later on today. 33 degrees to start in san jose. calm winds. winds were playing a factor yesterday. we had winds at 15 miles per hour in places like fairfield. this morning they dropped off and hence that cold, dense air able to settle to the surface. it will be a cold start to the day. we'll see a comfortable finish as we have the jet stream still to our south. cold air moves onshore. look at numbers. yesterday low 50s to upper 40s. today, 57 degrees. not too shabby in san jose. 56 in redwood city. 57 degrees in santa rosa. we'll keep on climbing as we head into the upcoming weekend and we actually have a slight chance for showers i want to tell you about as well. stick around. that's coming up in my next report. seven-day outlook, locked and loaded and ready to go. >> good morning. a chilly morning. so far roadways in the south bay looking good as far as traffic flow goes. look at this light volume for 101 just north of 680. on our map we'll show you the entire south bay region showing a nice smooth commute right now. i circled in the middle of your

screen south 880. there is your overnight road work. those crews have been there for the last week or so overnight. not steady. we do have a flow of traffic for the tri-valley. no slowing right now. easy drive and also continuing down toward castro valley y, hayward and 880. crockett looking at the carquinez. north or east on 80 across into the north bay for carquinez bridge we hear about a structure fire off the bridge. sounds like 100-year-old structure. no reports of injuries. we did see slowing across the bridge in eastbound 80 direction. i'll track that. it may be visible from there. live look outside will show you a smooth flow of traffic down the east shore freeway coming from carquinez bridge.

is "building." the social network is holding a press event at menlo park at 10:00 a.m. the company has not said what it plans to announce but nbc bay area news report scott budman believes it could be something that will take on google. >> facebook wants a bigger part of the search pie. advertisers can target you more efficient. >> now there have also been rumors facebook is working on its own smartphone but that's unlikely with what is being unveiled today. mark zuckerberg shot down speculation his team was building its own smartphone. here's a question. what will happen to apple stock today? it's been gradually falling for months taking a major hit yesterday after new signs the iphone 5 is not selling as well as expected. "the wall street journal" says apple cut orders for iiphone parts because of slower sales. the stock dipped below $500 a

share. that's the first time it has done that since last february. if you recall, apple was above 700 per share just last september. companies who make parts for the iphone also losing some ground yesterday. there are answers for renewed calls for congress to raise the debt ceiling. for more on that and a look at the world markets and how they did overnight, we turn to seema mody at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning to you. let's start with markets. futures lower after a mixed session on monday. as you pointed out apple weighing on tech on reports that it is cutting component costs but dell took others higher on talks it's in talk with several firms. we get a trio of federal reserve officials speaking out about the economy today. the dow rising 18 points in yesterday's trade and nasdaq slipping eight to close at 3117. here's our top story.

treasury secretary tim geithner is calling on congress to raise the debt ceiling. in a letter to lawmakers geithner says it could cause harm to the u.s. economy. the government will run out of tools to avoid defaulting on debt sometime in late february or early march. that would mean social security and other government benefit checks would stop going out. fed chairman ben bernanke is joining the cause saying the economy isn't out of the woods just yet from fiscal threats. back to you. >> thank you very much, seema. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren as we kind of adjust the shot. >> everyone come in. lean in. i'm the queen. you'll have to do something to stay warm out there this morning. lean back if that's what it takes. 4:47. it is cold out there this morning. you're going to need all the winter gear you have in your closet. you could wear the snowboarding gear to work this morning if you wanted to. stay warm.

i definitely brought my board and jacket in this morning. it's frigid out there. this is the last morning we expect the mid 20s. tomorrow we'll see more upper 20s and low 30s. this morning it is very cold. even colder than yesterday in some cities. just about the same in gilroy at 27 degrees to start. 33 in san jose. 30 in livermore. and concord this morning. and what's different is we lost that wind from yesterday. that mixes up our atmosphere and keeps the very cold dense air from settling to the surface. as a result it will get more and more cold as we head through the next two hours. it will be frigid by 7:35. keep that in mind. that's the coldest time of the day. you can bring in sensitive plants if you forgot to last night. our air quality suffered a little bit. we're expecting better air quality as we head through the next couple days. high pressure is now setting up. cold air courtesy of the jet stream continues to build in. high pressure will come in meaning the breeze will pick up picking up the air quality.

you don't see the layer of haze when the atmosphere is getting mixed up. more comfortable day setting up in san jose at 57. 56 for san francisco. 58 degrees the warmest city on that map is santa cruz. if you want to hit santa cruz this weekend, it's going to be comfortable. look at your numbers. they'll climb into the mid to upper 60s. we'll increase clouds as we get into monday of next week and a storm system moves onshore tuesday into wednesday. overall looking forward to a warmup. back to you guys. >> we get warmed up to go outside. this could be a game changer for active people with bad knees. a new gel that could put the bounce back in your step. it's a jell-o like substance developed by researchers at stanford. the gel may help mend damaged cartilage. up until now little could be done to repair damaged cartil e cartilage. researchers tested the gel on a small group of patients. it shows promise in becoming the standard for a simple low-cost

procedure. >> the major benefit is you have a repair that's more like the native cartilage which means it will last longer, it will perform better. the patient will be able to tolerate more weight bearing activities out having pain. >> larger studies are needed to determine if hydrogel is safe long-term. if it is, it could be available in just a few years. if you can't shake the cough after you get sick, not to worry. that's normal. a new study shows while most people think a cough should last no longer than a week or so the average cough actually lasts 18 days. the aim of the study was to highlight the gap between public perception and public reality. many ask for antibiotics for cough earlier than needed that contributes to antibiotics working less for everyone in the long run. in most cases an antihistamine and cough drops will do the

trick. coca-cola is launching two tv ads looking at the link between sugary drinks and obesity. the ads are part of a larger campaign to fight obesity promoting coke's growing line of low calorie and no calorie drinks and notes the obesity epidemic is due to many factors. >> remember the ad to keep the harmony. we share a lot of things like that. still ahead, the haunting memory of natalie wood. one thing that made the coroner change the death certificate and what may have happened in the final moments. we'll keep an eye on the morning commute out there starting to pick up. a live look at 880 in fremont. mike will have the latest across the bay area.

three decades after natalie wood's death a coroner's review is raising new questions about the events leading up to her drowning. if you recall wood died back in 1981 while on a yacht trip off catalina island with her husband robert wagner and co-star christopher walken. her death was originally ruled an accidental drowning and

bruises were determined to be from the actress trying to climb into a dingy. there is an updated report and the cause of death was changed from accidental drowning to drowning and other undetermined factors. the current medical examiner says the bruises likely occurred before she fell into the water. the los angeles county sheriff's department is continuing its investigation. >> interesting. 4:55 right now. seems like there's more people out there this morning early, mike. >> some folks may have taken it easy last week and when martin luther king birthday observed next monday a weird flow of traffic. a different flow every day. we'll look at headlights as they pass by the truck scales in fremont southbound with headlights north with taillights and right here for 880 you are just fine. in fact on the maps you see light volume for 880 and 680 north of fremont funnel where mission cuts over. we do have as you pass onramp on northbound side reports of a
